Recreation Mentoring

This program is available to children and youth under the age of 14 who are receiving mental health services. Referrals are accepted from a youth’s mental health professional (therapist, school social worker or psychologist). Participants also must live near one of the designated community recreation centers where the program is offered. Currently, these include Adams Street, Edgerton Center (on Backus Street), South Avenue and Atlantic Avenue.

Compeer staff mentors develop individual care plans that focus on specific goals for each youth. The mentors provide guidance, support, counseling and encouragement both individually and in groups. One long-range goal is for the youth to develop the skills necessary to access and participate fully in the program without assistance of a mentor.
