Key Milestones

1973 Compeer Rochester founded.
1980 Compeer receives the Natural Support System Award (NYS Office of Mental Health).
1987 Sally Jesse Raphael and Geraldo Rivera feature Compeer on their television programs. The Compeer Program expands to include at-risk youth, victims of traumatic head injury, and mentally ill homeless adults.

1989

Newsweek runs a Special Report on Compeer, “The Power of Friendship.”

1991 Compeer featured on NBC Nightly News.

2005

Then-Compeer Executive Director Bernice Skirboll makes a presentation at the First White House conference on Mental Health.

Compeer receives the Cultural Competency Best Practices Award from Monroe County Office of Mental Health.

Compeer named best-practices model by American Psychological Association (APA) task force.
