History

Founded in 1973, Compeer Rochester was the first Compeer location established anywhere in the world.

Originally named Adopt-A-Patient and part of the Mental Health Association in Rochester, it was created to enable previously institutionalized patients to successfully transition to and live in the Rochester community. The agency’s name was changed to Compeer in 1977 to better convey the mission of providing companionship and treating people with mental illness as an equal or peer.

In 1980, the New York State Office of Mental Health recognized Compeer with the Natural Support System Award.
